ORNAMENT

The ornament was evolving in the orient and in heathen cultures since ancient times as the main spiritual language, while in the occident spiritual visuals concentrated in Christian figurative motives before the abstraction movement influenced by the Theosophical society. The ornament was evolving in the orient and in heathen cultures since ancient times as the main spiritual language, while in the occident spiritual visuals concentrated in Christian figurative motives before the abstraction movement influenced by the Theosophical society. In the ornament itself the moment of geometrical repetition resembles the understanding of the world structure, while rotation resembles life in movement and mirroring resembles understanding yourself while observing others.

I grew up in a central asian Muslim country with its own ornament heritage and culture. In my artistic practice I transfer my visual experience into contemporary technique and amplify it with my own understanding and experience of spirituality.

The first ornaments are composed of elements based on documentary performative photography of my tailoring practice. This work adressed the prohibition of the human figure in isalmic tradition of ornaments. On the contrary one element that has been perfected over centuries in Islamic ornamentation is typography. This reference appears in my Affirmation Tiles, which also take up the nutritional theme via the honey reference with their hexagonal shape.
For the later ornaments I use scans of self-grown spouts, which are also my daily basis nutrition since years.
Sprouts are not only extremely healthy due to the mass of organic vitamins, microelements, minerals, proteins and fibers, but they are also very ecologically and economically sustainable.

You only need a sieve and clean water to grow them. And 500 g of wheat sprouts are enough wholesome nutrition for at least a whole month, instead of a bread loaf made of 500g wheat flour, which need a lot of energy to produce, last less than a week and doesn’t provide anything but the feeling of a full stomach.

Sprouts are not only easy to grow and healthy to eat but they provide energy for spiritual evolution, because they provide much more vital energy than the body requires for digestion. Furthermore, sprouts symbolize literally awakened life from sleep and metaphysically awakened consciousness from sleep. In the form of a photo scan there is even room for interpretation of eternal youth, because the sprouts always stay from 3-8 days old, while in reality they rather would grow into a plant or just dry out.

Furthermore, the plant is the central design element of a landscape architect. As a graduate of an academic degree in this field and already professionally experienced as a landscape architect and landscape engineer, I rediscover my expertise by planting the sprouts in digital collages. Bringing the sprouts physically into the exhibition space I expand the subject in a sculptural or installational way.
